ROGER EICHLER on TROJAN'S TREKS
Roger Eichler is the (volunteer) Operations Director for a charitable organisation called Trojan's Trek. The organisation began in 2009 in South Australia. It is a vehicle-led, wilderness-based peer support intervention which supports currently serving Military or Emergency Services members, or veterans of these services, to help them cope with their service induced trauma.
TROJAN'S TREK - WILDERNESS BASED PEER SUPPORT FOR VETERANS
Trojans Trek is very different to other organisations in that it is entirely run by volunteers who are past participants of the Trojans Trek program, so lessons taught during the program, and mentoring after the program, is done by peers. The program undertaken is a wilderness led camp of 7 days where participants are immersed in a program and are taught how to cope with their trauma, and how to communicate with peers and loved ones. This is important so they can express how they are feeling, and what they need to manage their daily activities.
The Trojan's Trek program is peer reviewed through Flinders University and monitored for 12 months after the camp is completed, thus ensuring targets are met, and participants progress towards a fully functioning future.
ROGER EICHLER
Roger was born in the 1960s to German immigrant parents. He joined the police force and served in rural communities across NSW. However an incident in August 2006 in which Roger almost lost his life had a severe impact on his career and his mental state. He has struggled with mental health issues and through the support of his family and friends he has written a book, The Price of Protecting Others, describing his time in the force and his mental health struggle. Roger now speaks of his struggle and volunteers his time to help other veterans who are finding it difficult to overcome mental health issues caused by their time in the services. Roger Eichler is the (volunteer) Operations Director for Trojan's Trek.
