Dawn Barrington is a singer/songwriter who is also a dedicated refugee advocate. Although the refugees from Manus no longer feature in daily news stories Dawn can tell us where many of these refugees have ended up. She was very actively keeping the issues facing these refugees alive and on the political agenda; she now keeps in touch with many of them and can tell you some of their stories as they resettle in Canada, the USA or New Zealand, or the struggles of those that remain in Australia.
THE MANUS REFUGEESAustralia set up the Manus Regional Processing Centre on Manus Island from 2001 to 2004 as part of its Pacific Island immigration solution. In 2012 it controversially announced it would resume offshore processing and in November 2012 the relocation of refugees to Manus Island resumed. The inhuman conditions under which refugees were kept here resulted in suicides, riots and refugees being attacked by locals. The United Nations and other organisations condemned Australia's detention system and they were forced to evacuate almost all refugees from Naru and Manus by 2019. Many of these refugees were brought back to Australia for medical treatment and remain in limbo or were sent to Port Moresby or third countries willing to accept them.
Dawn will be able to update people on the struggle faced by the Manus refugees. She will be able to update us on the refugees who were medivaced to Australia and those still in Port Moresby. She can give individual stories of those who have gone to third countries, such as Canada, the USA and New Zealand. Dawn can also talk on the current political stance on refugees, the corruption and the fact that there are new refugees being put on Nauru. She can also speak about the mental health of many refugees living in Australia invisible and their status in limbo.
