LAURELLE PRICE on WALKING KOKODA

Shoalhaven woman, Laurelle Price may well be the oldest woman to complete the Kokoda Trek. Last year she joined a group of volunteers to trek the arduous track to raise money for Shelterbox Australia. The 8 day journey retraced the steps of Australian soldiers through dense jungle, heavy showers, endless mud, steep mountain passes and numerous river crossings. Laurelle will talk about the demands placed on her as she completed the 96 kilometre trek.

WALKING KAKODA

The Kokoda Trail or Track is a single-file jungle path that runs 96 kilometres through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. The track is famous as the location of the World War II battle between Japanese and Australian forces in 1942. It is only passable on foot and a challenge to walk as hikers face hot and humid days, intensely cold nights, torrential rain and the risk of tropical diseases, such as malaria.

Laurelle Price joined Shelterbox Australia to walk the track as a fund-raiser. Shelterbox provides emergency shelter to people around the world who have lost their homes through natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes or armed conflict. While each participant paid their own way they were also expected to raise funds for Shelterbox. The trek raised over $60,000.

Laurelle talking about her tired legs and the constant mud, said "I was expecting it to be quite tough and it would call on all my resources, which it did".
