MICHELLE COOK on TINY HOUSES: A SOLUTION FOR HOMELESSNESS?
Tiny Houses are debated as an affordable, accessible solution to Australia’s homeless situation and the housing market crisis. Homelessness can hit single people, families and young people. As Tiny Houses are touted as an alternative to traditional houses some councils are changing their regulations to make it easier for people to live in them. There are now over 300 Tiny House Builders in Australia, each producing 1-20 tiny homes a month.
TINY HOUSES: A SOLUTION FOR HOMELESSNESS?
Michelle Cook is an Advocate for Tiny Houses and frequently presents on the growing demand for Tiny Houses in Australia. She will talk about government regulations, and the changes needed in these regulations to make it easier for people to build and use Tiny Houses.
Older women after a divorce, young couples saving for a home, people rebuilding after floods or fires, DV victims needing a safe place, job loss and unemployment resulting in losing the family home, farmers passing on the family home but wanting to stay on the property, carers helping elderly in place....all of these have created pressures on the housing situation in Australia. As the government vows to build more houses and to address the housing crisis Tiny Houses may be able to offer a solution.
Michelle discusses the trends in Tiny Houses, regulations at all three levels of government in Australia, costs associated with Tiny Houses and the latest innovations, including being off-the-grid. Michelle has first hand knowledge as she is building her own Tiny House and faces the complicated legislation surrounding how these houses can be used.
