SHIRLEY CORNISH on SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION BY PICTURES
Shirley Cornish loves to talk to Rotary Clubs about SHEP, Sexual Health Education by Pictures. It has been a 10 year journey for her teaching in Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Cambodia. She also presented at the Hamburg Convention and had a stand in the Hall of Friendship in Singapore. Sexual Health Education by Pictures has empowered girls and educated boys around the world. Children have grown to adults not really knowing what is happening in their bodies, with nothing to refer to this has been a mystery. By providing information through pictures people have been able to understand what is happening, what the consequences are and what their rights are. Shirley was recently awarded the District Award for Excellence in International Service for her prolonged work in this area.
SEXUAL HEALTH EDUCATION BY PICTURES
Sexual Health Education by Pictures (SHEP) is a short, adaptable teaching program having a huge impact. It involves clear creative pictures to get its message across to even those people who can't read. The program aims to address the challenges of rapid and continued population growth, with the UN’s World Population Prospects stating that the current world population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.9 billion in 2100.
The SHEP program, which was being run by the Rotary Club of Moruya, is now being taught in schools and via community organisations across the globe, including Tanzania, Nigeria, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Shirley has been involved in its delivery in many countries around the world and has seen the impact it makes. The program includes presentations on anatomy, family planning and STIs.
In countries, such as Nigeria the program is empowering girls to take charge of their sexual lives and teaching them they are not inferior to their male counterparts. In the Philippines Shirley gave a Train the Trainer course to four local health educators and SHEP was included in courses taught to 16,000 students in high schools and the community.
